Talk Therapy
I am in my second year of graduate study in Clinical Psychology at Saint Michael’s College and currently in my internship year (similar to a medical residency). This means I am training under the supervision of Leora Black, Ph.D., LMFT, LCMHC, who owns Counseling Connection, PLC.
I am a Rostered, Pre-Licensed Clinician with the State of Vermont (Credential #097.0136625).
In this role, I provide psychotherapy and work with individuals, children, couples, families, and polyamorous constellations. While I am still in training, I am able to form a therapeutic relationship with clients and offer ongoing sessions and care.

To avoid conflicts of interest, I am not able to take returning doula families as therapy clients.

As a therapist-in-training, I offer psychotherapy as an intern at Counseling Connection. Through the practice, clients can use Medicaid or fee-for-service.

A therapy intern is a graduate student who is completing the clinical training portion of their degree. Interns have taken most of their coursework and are gaining experience by working directly with clients as part of the schooling process. This stage is similar to a medical residency.
Interns practice under the supervision of one or more licensed clinicians who provide regular oversight and guidance. This structure ensures that client care is ethical, high-quality, and well-supported. At times, an intern may request to record a session or have a supervisor observe for training purposes. Consent is always required for these activities, and participation is entirely voluntary.

In Vermont, therapists who have completed the necessary education to practice but are still working toward full licensure can be added to the state’s official Roster of Psychotherapists Who Are Nonlicensed and Noncertified. Being on the roster means that the clinician has met state requirements to practice under supervision while gaining the experience and hours needed for independent licensure.
A “pre-licensed” clinician is simply in this supervised stage of professional development. All rostered clinicians are required to work under the guidance of licensed supervisors, ensuring that client care is closely supported and meets high ethical and professional standards.

Therapy with an intern is more similar to working with a licensed therapist than many people expect. Interns are trained in current approaches, meet with clients in the same way licensed clinicians do, and form a therapeutic relationship focused on your goals and needs. Sessions typically look and feel the same as they would with any other therapist.
The main differences are that interns practice under close supervision and may consult with their supervisors about client care (always maintaining confidentiality)
